British Council Australia

British Council Australia utilises Protsentient’s Interpublish software to maintain a suite of web sites each with their own unique functionality and purpose including science site mindSET, EducationUK, UK Alumni in Australia, a What's On events calendar and an E-zine registration form.

British Council Australia is virtual office in that it has no front of house reception and the Internet is used as the main communication tool in the promotion of their events and activities in Australia.

With only 14 staff in Sydney the council promotes UK Arts, Education and Science with each program boasting its own site. The council also runs an Alumni organisation where UK graduates currently living in Australia can register via the web to be informed of upcoming events in each state and can search and contact other Alumnus after searching an on-line database.

Each site has a distinct role and target audience and Interpublish is able to support all of the unique functionality required, including password protection, searchable databases, registration forms and a central event calendar.

Utilising a single Interpublish interface, British Council ICT Manager Dan Pulham supports the managers of all four sites while also monitoring web registrations sending HTML emails and developing new sites and functionality.

"As a journalist turned web manager, during the past five years I've had to learn or develop four web and content management systems.

"Interpublish is the first truly complete web management tool I’ve used that allows me to update copy and images, manage registrations and develop on-line databases all from the one interface.

"Apart from our home page which is hosted as part of British Council's global suite of sites using a visual editor that does not support on-line functionality, Interpublish manages all of our locally hosted web sites and their specific functionality.

"The most interesting use of the software is our What's On calendar of events. With the help of the Prosentient technical support staff, Interpublish has been setup so that British Council program managers, with virtually no web experience, can now enter the details of an event and choose to display them on any or all of the sites we host. In this way Interpublish is able to provide a single entry point with multiple publishing locations.

"With the Prosentient team we've also developed an interface allowing us to download events details into a Customer and Event Management Database so they can be planned and then evaluated.

"Our science manager maintains a database of world-wide contracts while the Alumni manager tracks new registrations and regularly uses the system to send out HTML emails to keep UK Alumni informed of their special events. Interpublish allows her to publish an editable web page to an e-mail list of registered users.

“The EducationUK site also offers dynamic database searching of scholarships and courses.

"With the trend in web publishing now putting the power back in the hands of users who control the information Interpublish gives non-technical personnel the ability to update and publish web pages.

“The web page visual editor utilises much the same functionality as that of Microsoft Word which almost all computer users are familiar with.

“The ability to preview a page and then edit it ‘live’ from another browser, publish and then see the results straight away also gives users a real thrill that web publishing provides.
