Developed by Prosentient Systems, Inter-Publish is a website content management package that gives editors, without skills in Internet document mark-up techniques, the ability to publish information on Internet and Intranet sites.

It does this by separating content from design elements and providing tools that allow anyone with basic word processing and email skills to publish and manage web content.

Inter-Publish also provides complete control of websites at an administration level by further separating content elements such as web pages, images, audio, video, contacts and projects into their own categories for easy management.

Inter-Publish is also able to store previous versions of web pages for easy recall and provides the means to prepare and preview web pages before they are published to a live website.

In the development of Inter-Publish, Prosentient Systems have reached beyond the capabilities of normal web content management systems by drawing on a rich blend of research in content and knowledge management.   Prosentient Systems have done so by focusing on the long-term value of content as an asset and developing simple visualisation tools that further enhance its utility.

What are the main features?

  • Editorial workflow tools and overall control of content presentation
  • Content versioning and publishing tracking for easy recovery and reuse of content
  • Easy to use content publishing tools to preview and edit pages then reflect changes immediately in a separate browser window.  This includes WYSIWYG capabilities both in page editing and site browsing.
  • The ability to collect content from a variety of sources and publish to a new destination
  • Advanced persistent search results (content collections based on complex selection criteria can be saved and reused for editing and publishing).
  • Publishing to multiple web server platforms (no proprietary runtime engine licensing required)
  • XML data interchange
  • Information publishing via XML, HTML, Email and other methods
  • An ability to build content databases of all sorts: contact lists, feedback, survey results etc.
  • Indexing of database content by subject, title, date or any other definition and a powerful meta-markup language
  • Effective metadata and controlled vocabulary management
  • The ability to build new forms for information capture and publishing
  • Scheduling capabilities to allow auto-publishing
  • Global replace and republishing features for easy design make-overs
  • Visual content editing interfaces that give web editors authoring tools they are familiar with
  • Multi-level security both in content access and editorial capability
  • Demonstrated integration with e-commerce and Customer Relationship Management systems.

Innovation

Like most good CMS systems, an essential feature of Inter-Publish is the separation of content from its presentation.

This allows for:

  • Effective editorial control of the presentation of information
  • Easy entry of document information without excessive need for HTML knowledge
  • A simple means to make layout changes to the entire site or intranet by modifying a "layout" document rather than embedding this information in each separate document
  • Easy update of small or large website changes
  • An ability to reuse website content in for multiple purposes (e-zines, web pages, etc)

Despite the frenetic development of content management systems released to market in the last three years there still exists an urgent need for effective models taking into account the long-term asset value of information.

As most systems are directed to the primary generation of website content the increased functionality of these products has not necessarily addressed the economic and management benefits that can be derived from a long term approach to content management.

Many organisations spend a large amount of capital in the design and re-design of websites but across the generational changes of these website there is often very little reuse of valuable content.

Media and Communications organisations in particular often have rich content resources that offer great potential for syndication and reuse but lack the framework to leverage their content in this way.

Inter-Publish is designed to yield benefits in organisations with rich information resources and a strong existing web presence which have failed to capitalise on the information asset potential of their current content resources.

While a few CMS products in the market do provide the breadth of functionality present in Inter-Publish, its design is truly unique in its long-term view of the asset value of corporate information and website content.

Its innovation lies in its unique method of content database organisation permitting the reuse of content in many formats whilst preserving a method of content presentation that is meaningful to the end user.

The content management concepts driving Inter-Publish are the result of two years research at the University of Sydney and in development of CMS software for organisations with very large content resources such as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.  The British Council has demonstrated the effectiveness of content reuse using Inter-publish: the MontageWorld site is an online educational resource that provides separate country-specific educational resources and a consolidated international resource.  A central resource of educational projects and schools is used to publish eight country sites and an international educational clearinghouse.

Inter-Publish draws on a rich blend of research and practical publishing experience to provide a user visualisation framework that truly delivers effective content management informed by concepts of long term knowledge management.

Prosentient Systems has demonstrated the economic benefits of effective content reuse to their clients in:

  • The lower cost of website maintenance
  • Increased productivity in publishing
  • More effective reuse of content
  • Empowerment over the management of website content
  • Compliant with w3c recommendations for website publishing

Prosentient Systems have developed Content Management Systems over five years for clients such as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, The British Council, and the Australian Tourism Export Commission.

Inter-Publish has been developed specifically with the following key attributes in mind:

  • Internationalisation of the software framework from ground up, including the capability to manage multilingual content and the ability to configure the user interface to support internationalisation of the user front end
  • Standards compliance and integration with popular content authoring tools
  • Innovative content presentation making content accessible through many methods of content visualisation

The software is engineered for scalability and reliability with inbuilt error status reporting and user management control.

User session continuity can be maintained across multiple load-shared servers and through the reboot of the currently connected server and any single content server can support up to 2000 concurrent user sessions.

Additional content servers can be added latitudinally by adding additional servers on a load-sharing basis, or longitudinally by running additional instances of the content server on a single box.

Inter-Publish is designed to be implemented as:

  • A single standalone content server for a small business
  • Multi-server operation for a single corporation publishing to one or more URL's
  • Application Service Provider configuration allowing the content server to be partitioned by a service provider across multiple databases and servers.

The server software component is designed for efficiency and has a small footprint on the target server platform. The software can be installed on any Microsoft Windows platform (Windows 95 or later) and services browser-based access to the content database providing universal sharing of content access.

Potential

The software is designed for international use and provides a framework for multinational collaborative sharing of information for long-term content reuse.  The software is re-enforced through research work at University of Sydney, providing a leading-edge foundation for the design of the system.

Prosentient Systems has worked with business partners in Australia to evaluate and target potential markets for the software.  Inter-Publish is marketed in Australia through Molten Media Pty Ltd, and international distribution partners are available.

Inter-Publish also provides an effective framework to propagate digital content development by broadband suppliers, and is very suitable to media organisations and ISP’s.

Inter-PublishTM Architecture
